Before you travel, you should know a few basic things about the country you plan to visit. Is its border open to foreign travelers ? COVID-19 case numbers and vaccination rates
The pandemic is still far from over, so it's wise not to visit destinations where COVID-19 cases are high or on the increase. This is especially important if you are unvaccinated. It's also very important to look at the percentage of the local population that's been vaccinated, whether or not you yourself have been vaccinated. Traveling to a country with low rates of vaccination puts the local people at risk of infection if you are COVID-positive. Even if you are vaccinated, it's always wise to have a negative COVID-19 test before entering.

Which countries are open, closed or have restrictions in place?
We are unable to update a list of restrictions and border openings for every country in the world, but below we have listed the most popular countries to visit (alphabetically), with information on how you can find out more about travel restrictions, covid-19 cases numbers and vaccine rates. Canada: The rules around entering and leavingCanada depend on your vaccination status. The online tool, 'Find out if you can travel to Canada' will help you find out if you can enter. A s of 15 January 2022, the exemptions in entry requirements for certain groups of travelers will change.From 7 September 2021, fully vaccinated travelers can enter Canada for tourism as long as they can show proof of vaccination received at least 14 days before entering, have a pre-arrival COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival, submit their mandatory information via ArriveCAN, including proof of vaccination in English or French and a quarantine plan in case the necessary requirements are not met. Travelers who are not fully vaccinated, are subject to quarantine, all testing requirements (pre-arrival, upon arrival/day 1 and on day 8) and the mandatory submission of travel, contact and quarantine information via ArriveCAN. Further details are available on Transport Canada's website, and Public Health Canada's website. Go to, "Find out if you can travel to Canada" on the Government of Canada website to check eligibility to enter. Those without a valid test result will be denied boarding or entry. If you are traveling from a country where molecular testing is unavailable you will be required to quarantine for 14 days quarantine. Further details are available on the COVID-19 vaccinated travelers entering Canada web page. Antigen tests, often called "rapid tests" are not accepted. The US land border with Canada will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least 21 October 2021. Unvaccinated foreign nationals are banned from entering Canada except for essential reasons. Those who meet the exemptions may still be required to quarantine for up to 14 days. If you're a foreign national (not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada), you won't be able to enter if you have COVID-19 symptoms.
Colombia: From 14 December 2021, all international passengers aged 18 and over must show proof of vaccination upon entry to Colombia, with the final vaccine dose having been administered at least 14 days prior to travel.Unvaccinated foreign nationals who don't hold a Permanent Resident visa in Colombia cannot enter the country. International flights have resumed with limited destinations. On 4 June 2021, the Ministry of Health announced that all inbound international passengers no longer need a negative COVID-19 test result (See US Embassy in Colombia web page.). All eligible international passengers must fill out an immigration form online 24 hours before the flight. You cannot enter Colombia if you have symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive in the last 14 days.
Costa Rica: Check the requirements for entry. From 1 August 2021 travelers with proof of double vaccination received more than 14 days previously, can enter without mandatory insurance. All others will need to buy insurance with specific cover requirements. All travelers must complete an advance epidemiological information form. Check if you need a visa.
Croatia:To enter Croatia, travelers need one of the following: a negative COVID-19 antigen no older than 48 hours, or a negative PCR test result not older than 72 hours, or proof of vaccination, or a doctor's certificate of recovery following a positive test result between 11 and 180 days prior). (See 'Demonstrating your COVID-19 vaccination status'). Travelers from most countries can enter Croatia without the need for pre-arrival testing or quarantine if they arrive at least 14 days after receiving two doses of a vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Travelers from countries that are not members of the EU / EEA (including US citizens) must also show proof of accommodation paid for in advance. Third-country travelers or EU / EAA travelers not on the green list who have not been vaccinated must show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival or proof of having contracted COVID–19 and recovered within the last six months. Passengers from countries to which special epidemiological measures apply are obliged to present a negative PCR test result not older than 48 hours and they have to stay in self-isolation for 14 days. Ecuador: From 1 December, Ecuador is opening its land border with Colombia. The land border with Peru is scheduled to open on 15 December 2021, but only through the 'Rumichaca' international checkpoint, from 8am to 5pm. U pon entry to Ecuador, all travelers (except airline crew and children age two and under) must complete a Health Declaration Form with itinerary and local contact details andmust provide proof of a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR or rapid antigen test taken no more than 72 hours before entering Ecuador or present a COVID-19 vaccination card showing they have received a complete series of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to entering Ecuador. Alternatively, travelers who have had COVID-19 can present a medical certificate from their country of origin attesting to their recovery, as long as the onset of the COVID-19 symptoms occurred more than 30 days prior to arrival in Ecuador. As of 1 July 2021, fully vaccinated travelers do not need to present a negative COVID-19 test to enter the Galapagos. Travelers whose point of origin is Brazil must present a negative RT-PCR or rapid antigen test carried out up to 72 hours before arrival in Ecuador, and self-isolate for 10 days even if the test is negative. This requirement does not apply to fully vaccinated travelers.
Egypt: Commercial flights have restarted. All arrivals (including those who hold Egyptian nationality) arriving from overseas must have proof of a full course of COVID-19 vaccination (completed at least 14 days prior to arrival in Egypt) or a negative PCR test (taken within 72 hours prior to departure). Children under the age of 6 are exempt. Proof of COVID-19 recovery will not be accepted. Passengers are subject to temperature checks, must fill out a Public Health Card, and show proof of a valid health insurance policy. Find out if you require a visa and apply online via Egypt's Online Visa portal.
France: From 18 December 2021, travel from the UK, regardless of a person's vaccination status, must be deemed essential as defined by the French authorities. French nationals and residents are exempt. Go to the French Government website (in French) to learn what constitutes essential travel. From 29 November 2021, travelers must present a negative PCR or antigen COVID-19, carried out less than 24 hours before departure. From 15 January 2022, arrivals must show evidence of a booster vaccine to get the French 'pass sanitaire'. France has introduced a new system governing international travel to and from France. There are three categories of measures: green, amber and red. Check the status of the country you are traveling to or from on the French government's website. If traveling from a country on the green list, travelers will not need to have an essential reason to enter France or to self-isolate. Fully vaccinated travelers from countries on the green list will be able to enter without showing a negative COVID-19 test. Vaccinated travelers from the amber list, including children aged 11 and above, must present a negative PCR or antigen COVID-19, carried out less than 48 hours before departure. Unvaccinated travelers on the amber list can only travel to France for essential reasons. All travelers must complete a 'sworn statement' (déclaration sur l'honneur) certifying they have no symptoms associated with COVID-19 and have not been in contact with a confirmed case in the previous 14 days. This form can be found on the French government's website.
Germany: All travelers entering Germany from the UK are required to complete pre-departure digital registration, regardless of vaccination status. Travel without restrictions is only allowed if the area is not defined as "high-risk" by the Robert Koch Insitute (RKI). Anyone who has spent 14 days before arrival in an identified risk area is obliged to self-isolate in their own home or suitable accommodation for 14 days or provide proof of a negative test result for COVID-19 taken within 48 hours prior to entry or be tested on arrival. From 1 August 2021 travelers aged 12 or over entering Germany must have proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery, or a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival. If you are 12 or over, traveling from the UK and are not fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19, you will need to enter Germany with either a PCR test result that is no more than 72 hours old or a rapid antigen or another test sample that is no more than 48 hours old. Greece: Travelers to Greece must complete aPassenger Locator Form (PLF)before arrival. Travelers also need one of the following: proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, undertaken within the 72 hour period before arrival into Greece; or proof of a negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test from an authorized laboratory, undertaken within the 48 hour period before your arrival into Greece; or proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days before travel (seeDemonstrating your COVID-19 status). Greece will also accept proof of recovery from COVID-19 for entry purposes. Travelers may be required to undergo a rapid COVID-19 test on arrival. Anyone who tests positive (including fellow travelers in your party) will have to self-isolate in quarantine hotels provided by the Greek state. Check Greek authorities' advice for further information.
Iceland: All travelersmust pre-register before arriving in Iceland. You must also present either a certificate of full vaccination or a certificate of the previous infection, at the border. Without either of these, travelers must undergo 2 tests and quarantine for 5 days in between. 14 days must have to have passed since the second dose for a certificate to be valid. If the time is shorter than 14 days, travelers will be tested at the border and must follow the rules on home quarantine until they receive a negative result. Vaccinated passengers, and those with prior infection of COVID-19, must present a negative covid-19 test (either a PCR or Rapid antigen test) taken within 72 hours before departure. The fine for not presenting a negative PCR-test is 100.000 ISK. From 30 August 2021, travelers recently diagnosed with COVID-19 do not need to present a negative PCR or rapid antigen test at the border. Instead, they need a positive PCR test that is more than 14 days (isolation completed) but fewer than 180 days. Find out more.
Ireland:Travellers arriving into Ireland from Great Britain with valid proof of full vaccination, or with proof of recovery from COVID-19 within 180 days, will not require travel-related testing or quarantine.All travelers must fill out a health passenger locator form and provide a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test carried out no more than 72 hours prior to their arrival in Ireland. Travelers from high-risk countries are subject to mandatory hotel quarantine. Travelers from other countries must quarantine for 14 days at their place of residence. Italy: From 31 August 2021, travelers can enter Italy without quarantining if they have been fully vaccinated, have recovered from COVID-19, have a negative PCR or antigen test, taken within 48 hours before entering Italy. Travelers who are unvaccinated or can't show proof of vaccination and a negative test must self-isolate for 5 days. Travelers must complete an online digital form that will generate a QR code, which should be presented to your travel provider and Border Police if requested. A paper form can be completed if you do not have an electronic device. All arrivals in Italy must also call the COVID-19 helpline for the region you are traveling to within 48 hours, to inform them of your visit. Mexico:
Nepal: All international travelers must quarantine for 10 days after arrival, regardless of vaccination status. All tourists entering Nepal must possess the following documents: 1) PCR negative report taken before 72 hours of boarding OR document showing complete vaccination against COVID-19, 2) visa to Nepal OR recommendation letter from the Department of Tourism or Nepal Tourism Board to participate in tourism activities within Nepal, 3) hotel booking confirmation or guarantee of accommodation (that allows for 10 days of quarantining if traveler is unvaccinated), 4) proof of travel insurance which covers emergency search, rescue, treatment, among others, for the duration of their travel and 5) a barcode generated from the online application of the Online International Travel Arrival Form. The Department of Immigration has more information.
Peru: Travelers must wear two face masks on flights to Peru and complete an affidavit before travel. Peru's national State of Emergency has been extended until at least 31 October 2021. Travelers must show evidence of vaccination given at least 14 days before arrival, or a negative PCR test no more than 72 hours old. Foreign nationals who have traveled from South Africa or Botswana (or stopped over in South Africa or Botswana in the last 14 calendar days) and are not resident in Peru are banned until at least 2 January 2022. Until at least 2 January 2022 all Peruvian nationals and foreign residents in Peru who enter Peru from South Africa or Botswana or who have stopped over in these countries must show evidence of having been fully vaccinated either in Peru or abroad and show proof of a negative result from a COVID-19 PCR (molecular) test, issued a maximum of 48 hours before the flight departs.
Portugal: Travelers must complete an online passenger locator card and show a negative COVID-19 test result certificate taken in the last 72 hours. If the test result is positive, travelers must quarantine for 14 days in accommodation or at a place indicated by the Portuguese health authority, unless you can show you have been vaccinated with an EU approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to travel. Travel is allowed between Portugal and EU countries, as well as England, Scotland, and the US. If traveling from any other non-EU/EEA country, or an EU/EEA country where the COVID-19 incidence rate is 150 cases or more per 100,000 inhabitants, you can only enter for essential purposes. If your journey originated in India, South Africa, Brazil or in an EU member state where the COVID-19 incidence rate exceeds 500 per 100,000 inhabitants, or you have been in one of these countries in the last 14 days, you must self-isolate on arrival for 14 days at home or at a place indicated by the Portuguese health authority. All passengers, excluding children up to the age of 12, traveling to Portugal must show a negative RT-PCR test result for SARS/COVID-19 taken within 72 hours of travel or an approved, negative antigen test taken within 24 hours of travel. South Africa: Strict health protocols are in place for international travelers to South Africa. You must show a paper copy of a negative PCR test on arrival in South Africa taken no more than 72 hours before your departure and install a government contact tracing app. Without proof of a test, you must take a COVID-19 test at your own expense and possibly quarantine at your own cost. You will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire on the plane before you enter South Africa. South Africa has opened its land borders from 15 February 2021 in 20 locations to Botswana, Lesotho, Kingdom of Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Extra staff have been deployed at borders and a ticket system is in place to limit Covid tests being done at the border. There is also a crackdown on fake COVID-19 test certificates.
Spain:Anyone arriving by air or sea must fill in and sign an online Health Control Form or submit a hard copy before boarding. From 2 July 2021, UK travelers must present a pre-travel declaration form and either a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination. See Testing and vaccination requirements for arrivals from the UK for details. Borders are open to travelers from the EU and all Schengen Area countries without quarantine. Travelers from high-risk countries must provide a negative PCR test carried out within 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain. All travelers must fill out and sign the FCS form, and present the QR code upon arrival.Effective 6 September 2021, US citizens can travel from the United States to Spain on non-essential travel (such as tourism) if they show proof of vaccination. Additionally, they must present upon arrival in Spain a QR code generated through the Spain Travel Health portal.
Switzerland: From 27 November 2021, passengers from the UK mustself-quarantine for 10 days.From 20 September 2021, travelersmust have proof of vaccination and proof of a negative COVID-19 test result. T ravelers who have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or can't demonstrate they have recovered from the virus, must provide a negative COVID test result (either PCR or antigen) and take a second test between four and seven days after arrival. All travelers arriving by air must complete a passenger locator form. Swiss borders have reopened to travelers from EU Member States, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and the United Kingdom. Read the FAQs if you are a third-country national. From 6 July 2021, travelers from certain countries must quarantine for ten days, regardless of their nationality – see the Swiss Federal Council website for the latest list.
Tanzania: All passengers arriving in Tanzania must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate taken within 96 hours of departure. All passengers must complete an online Traveller's Surveillance Form submitted no more than 24 hours before arrival. All passengers will be subjected to enhanced screening for COVID-19 including a mandatory rapid test. If you test positive for COVID-19 on arrival, you will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
Thailand: The Thailand Pass scheme is now closed for all new Test and Go and Sandbox applications, except for the Phuket Sandbox.See the Thailand Pass website to find out more From 1 November 2021, fully vaccinated travelers from 46 countries may enter Thailand without quarantine. PCR testing is still required before departure and upon arrival. See more details on entry guidelines and the full list of 46 countries on Tourism Authority of Thailand website.If you want to travel to Thailand, you must apply for permission to travel via the Royal Thai Government's online platform.Fully vaccinated travelers arriving from countries not on the list can enter Thailand under theSandbox Programme. This requires you to stay in a hotel or other accommodation approved by the Thai government for 7 nights. Check the Thai Embassy FAQ page and this page on entry procedures for the latest information.
Turkey: Turkey's international land and sea borders are open. However, short-notice changes, especially temporary closures of land borders, are possible. All arrivals into Turkey, except Turkish citizens or residence permit holders, must complete an online form within 72 hours of travel. All travelers must show proof of one of the following: a full course of COVID-19 vaccinations, recent recovery from COVID-19, a negative PCR test (taken within 72 hours of arrival). NB: vaccinated travelers do not need a PCR test. Travelers from the UK, Iran, Egypt or Singapore must have a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arriving in Turkey. Passengers from Brazil, South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka are banned from entering Turkey until further notice. Arrivals who have been in Brazil, South Africa, Nepal and Sri Lanka in the last 14 days, must submit a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival and must be quarantined for 14 days in government-run quarantine at their own expense. Travelers from Bangladesh, India, or Pakistan, or who have been there in the last 14 days, must submit a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival.
United Arab Emirates: All arrivals to the UAE must have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken a maximum of 72 hours before departure for arrivals to Dubai, and no more than 48 hours for arrivals to Abu Dhabi. Travelers to Abu Dhabi must also take a PCR test on arrival. A positive result will require further testing and isolation. Foreign visitors to Dubai must have a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate and international health insurance. Passengers (including transit) must complete this health declaration form, and a quarantine undertaking form if your final destination is Dubai. United Kingdom: You must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test to travel to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from overseas. From 2 August 2021, travelers who have been fully vaccinated in many European countries or the USA don't need to quarantine on arrival in England or take a day 8 test. Different rules apply through the UK with the national governments of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland easing restrictions in different phases and at different times. United States: From 29 November 2021, the US Government has suspended entry for non-citizens who have been in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the USA. More details are on The White House website. Restrictions may change at short notice so you should check this regularly in case of further developments.On 8 November 2021, the US Government lifted travel restrictions for foreign citizens who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. More details are on theUS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)andUS Embassy websites, which include a list of exceptions from the vaccination requirements for certain categories of non-citizens and non-immigrants. Children under 18 are exempt from the vaccination requirement. You need to apply for a visa or an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) visa waiver to enter or transit the USA as a visitor. You should consult the US State Department website to determine which you will need. There are restrictions on who can enter or transit the USA. Effective 26 January 2021, all air passengers entering the United States will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of departure. Airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers before boarding. Passengers allowed entry to the US must self-isolate for at least 7 days on arrival and take a COVID-19 test 3 to5 days after arrival. The land borders with Mexico and Canada are closed to non-essential travel until at least 21 October 2021.

When traveling, please consider the risk you impose on yourself and others, particularly if visiting countries with low rates of vaccination. You can check global vaccination rateshere.
- If you fall under a high-risk category for COVID-19, which includes adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions, follow the advice of your doctor
- In the days and weeks leading up to your planned trip, stay up to date with information from your airline or travel provider to see how your plans have changed or if your flights are affected
- Be aware of mandatory quarantine requirements in your final destination. Come prepared with face masks if they are a requirement by the airline you are flying with, or mandatory in the country you are visiting
- Follow the advice of local authorities wherever you do go. Not doing so may be a criminal offense and result in fines or imprisonment
- If you have minor symptoms such as cough, headache or mild fever, stay home and self-isolate until you recover
- Cases of COVID-19 are rapidly spreading in some countries while beginning to slow in others
- Where restrictions have been lifted, the risk may still be present and you should continue to follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines as provided by the World Health Organization:
- Wash your hands consistently (carry hand sanitizer)
- Try to avoid crowded places
- Maintain at least 3ft (1m) distance between yourself and others
- If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early and don't leave home until COVID-19 has been ruled out.
